FORT WORTH, Texas –
Junior First baseman Travis Clifford continued his hot hitting,
launching a double and a homerun, as Texas Wesleyan (23-12, 6-1
in RRAC) defeated RRAC foe Southwest Assemblies of God University
(10-16-1, 1-4 in RRAC) by a score of 4-3.
With the score tied 3-3, third baseman
Jason Vaughn doubled to lead off the ninth inning. Designated Hitter
Jarod Baker's single drove him home to secure the victory for the
Rams. Vaughn extended his hitting streak to eleven games.
Not to be outdone, Clifford extended his
team high hitting streak to fourteen games and recorded his twelfth
multi-hit game of the season. His homerun to lead off the sixth
inning tied the game at 2-2.
Red River Athletic Conference Pitcher of
the Week Jason Hopson threw seven innings allowing three runs on
eleven hits while striking out three. The Rams are now 9-1 in games
Hopson starts.
Junior Michael Talley pitched the final
two innings, allowing only one baserunner, to pick up his first
win of the year.
Senior Anthony Bolivar went three for three
at the plate, and was instrumental in a double steal play to score
the go ahead run in the sixth. Bolivar avoided the SAGU shortstop’s
tag until leftfielder Zach Archer safely reached home.
The Rams were ranked 26th in the latest
NAIA baseball poll, receiving 34 votes, 17 behind Southern Polytechnic
(GA.).
The two teams face off again Saturday April
9th in doubleheader action. First pitch is scheduled for noon. Wesleyan
then travels east to face Southern Arkansas Tuesday April 12th and
Henderson State Wednesday April 13th. All home games are played
at LaGrave Field.
