BELTON, Texas - The Texas Wesleyan
baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Mary-Hardin
Baylor. The Crusaders took game one, 8-4, and held off a furious
comeback attempt by the Rams in game two, 11-9.
In the opening game, Mary-Hardin Baylor
jumped out to an early 7-0 lead over the Rams. The Crusaders scored
six runs in the second inning and added another run in the third
inning.
Texas Wesleyan (22-12) fought back with
three runs in the top of the sixth inning. Freshman Jason Vaughn
had the big blow, launching a three-run home run to left field and
cut the lead to 7-3.
Mary-Hardin Baylor added a run in the bottom of the sixth.
The Rams tallied a run in the top of the
seventh when sophomore Nathan Brandt scored senior Dan Bruce from
third on a groundout.
Chase Martin (1-1) suffered the loss for
the Rams, allowing seven runs on seven hits while walking two and
striking out two batters in three innings of work.
In game two, the Crusaders again jumped
out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning off
of Ram starting pitcher Brandon Wilson.
The Rams would fight back once again, tying
the game with one run in the second inning and two more in the third
inning. Senior Anthony Bolivar singled in freshman Josh Vander Hey
in the second inning, and Vander Hey connected on a two-run home
run to left field to tie the game in the third inning.
Mary-Hardin Baylor scored eight runs over
the next three innings to increase its lead to 11-4. Texas Wesleyan
made a furious comeback attempt in the top of the seventh inning,
scoring five runs. They received an RBI-single from freshman Brad
Henderson, a two-run home run from sophomore Nathan Brandt and two
unearned runs off of two Crusader pitchers.
Brandon Wilson (1-2) suffered the loss
for the Rams, allowing three runs on two hits, while walking three
batters in just 0.2 innings of work.
Despite the doubleheader sweep, two Rams
still stood out at the plate. Vander Hey finished the day going
4-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI. The Cypress, Texas native
is leading the conference with a .481 batting average. Vaughn also
had a great day at the plate, going 3-for-7 with three runs scored
and four RBI.
The Rams will be back in action Friday
when they host conference-rival Southwestern Assemblies of God.
First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at LaGrave Field.
