FORT WORTH, Texas – Shortstop Billie Hicks and starting pitcher Jason Hopson combined to guide Texas Wesleyan (21-10, 4-1) to a 2-1 victory in the first game of the team’s doubleheader against Red River Conference rival Northwood University. Northwood rallied to split the series, winning the second game 15-3.

Hicks homered off Knights pitcher Greg Kalldin’s second pitch of the game. He followed up with another solo shot to lead off the sixth inning. Hicks finished the doubleheader with two homeruns, a double, and a single in six at-bats.

Hopson was once again dominant in winning his fifth game of the season. The Rams are now 8-1 in games he starts. Hopson went the distance, striking out six, walking two, and giving up only one earned run.

Leftfielder Zach Archer proved he was back in game condition gunning down Knights centerfielder Jason Ford at the plate during the third inning. However, Archer struggled at the plate going 0 for six at the plate with a strikeout.

In the second contest, pitcher Shea Harrison was rocked for three homeruns in the first inning as Northwood batters assaulted the pitcher for six earned runs in the first frame. Harrison calmed down and limited the Knights to only one additional run over the next four innings.

Sophomore Thomas Harrah relieved Harrison in the sixth inning, but was also roughed up, surrendering four earned runs in two innings of work.

Senior Utility man Jared Baker led off the seventh inning with a first-pitch homerun into the right field bleachers.

First baseman Travis Clifford extended his hitting streak to a season best ten games going 4-7 including two doubles and an RBI. Josh Vander Hey’s streak was ended at nine games after he failed to get a hit in the second contest.

Sophomore Jason Diaz drew his team leading 28th walk of the season, and is on pace to challenge the single season team walk record of 49 set by Alan Ascherl in 1982.

The Rams travel to Northwood University to complete the season series Saturday April 2nd. First pitch is scheduled for 1 pm. Wesleyan travels to Mary Hardin Baylor for a doubleheader Tuesday April 5th.

The team will be back at LaGrave Field taking on the Lions of conference foe Southwest Assemblies of God University Friday April 8th and 9th. First pitch of the Friday doubleheader is scheduled for 2 pm. Saturday’s contest begins at noon.
