FORT WORTH, Texas –
The red hot Texas Wesleyan Rams (20-9) defeated the Tabor College
Bluejays (13-14) 11-6 at LaGrave Field Thursday afternoon on the
strength of a pair of two-run homeruns by Senior Centerfielder Mark
Smajstrla. The win expanded the Rams winning streak to a season
high eight games.
Chase Martin, Tim McWilliams, Michael
Talley, Brandon Wilson, and David Hinson combined to get the victory
for Wesleyan. Starting Pitcher Chase Martin lasted only three innings
before giving way to Tim McWilliams, Michael Talley, Brandon Wilson,
and finally David Hinson. Wilson pitched two innings, giving up
one run on four hits with one strikeout. Hinson pitched the final
two innings to pick up the save, his first of the season.
To the amusement of several of his teammates, Hinson also knocked
a single up the middle when forced to bat in the eigth inning.
Smajstrla’s homeruns in the
seventh and eighth innings gave the team all the room they would
need. Both hits came following walks by Sophomore Jason Diaz. Smajstrla’s
carried over his sizzling hitting from Texas Wesleyan’s series
at College of the Southwest where he went four for ten including
a solo homerun and three runs batted in.
Travis Clifford, Diaz, and Josh Vander
Hey all extended their hitting streaks to eight games.
Third baseman Jason Vaughn reached
base four times on a pair of doubles, a triple, and a walk. He also
scored three runs including taking home on a wild pitch in the third
inning.
Zach Archer patrolled left field for
the first time since injuring his shoulder earlier in the season.
Archer also went one for four at the plate.
The Rams host Red River Conference
rival Northwood Friday April 1st before traveling to Cedar Hill
to play Northwood Saturday April 2nd. The home doubleheader begins
at 1 p.m. All home games are played LaGrave Field in Fort Worth.
