FORT WORTH, Texas - Freshman Jessica
Bancroft's walk-off single in the second game of a doubleheader
led Texas Wesleyan to a split with Midland Lutheran, Saturday afternoon
at Sycamore Park. The Lady Rams fell in the first game, 6-4, but
stormed back in the second game to win, 8-7.
In the second game, the Lady Warriors again
got started early, scoring a run in the first inning off of Lady
Ram starting pitcher Devin Blew.
Texas Wesleyan (18-9) tied the game at
1-1, in the bottom of the first inning as shortstop Vanessa Urteaga
scored an unearned run to knot the score.
Midland Lutheran tacked on four more runs
in the second inning and a run in each the third and fourth innings
to run the score to 7-1.
The Lady Rams pushed across a run in the
fourth inning as designated player Marie Stone singled home leftfielder
Danah Merck.
In the fifth inning, third baseman Ariel
Raley deposited a Lady Warrior pitch over the left-field fence for
a two-run home run. Pitcher Tara Sharp scored on the play after
reaching base with a one-out single. The blast cut the lead to 7-4.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Wesleyan
rallied for three runs to tie the score. Bancroft's ground ball
to the second baseman was mishandled and Blew and Stone scored to
cut the lead to 7-6. After an errant throw by the Lady Warrior's
third baseman, Urteaga singled home Bancroft to tie the game.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Bancroft
laced a shot past a diving third baseman to score catcher Rachel
Hampton and give the Lady Rams the victory.
Midland Lutheran opened the scoring in
the first game in the first inning, scoring two runs off of Lady
Ram starting pitcher Rachel Lamont.
The Lady Warriors added an unearned run
in the third inning to make the score, 3-0.
Texas Wesleyan fought back, scoring four
runs in the fourth inning. Bancroft doubled home two runs, Sharp
single home a run and Urteaga produced a RBI-groundout to give the
Lady Rams a 4-3 advantage.
Midland Lutheran answered with three runs
in the fifth inning to take a commanding 6-4 lead.
Lamont suffered the loss for the Lady Rams, allowing six runs on
10 hits, while walking three walks and striking out one batter in
4.2 innings of work.
Texas Wesleyan will be back in action Wednesday
when it travels to take on conference-rival Northwood in Cedar Hill,
Texas. The doubleheader is set to begin at 2 p.m.
