     ABILENE, Texas -
Junior Jason Hopson picked up his team-leading third victory on the mound, leading Texas Wesleyan to a doubleheader split against McMurry Tuesday afternoon. The Rams took the opening game, 3-2, but were shutout in the second game, 5-0.

In game one, Texas Wesleyan (7-6) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when centerfielder Mark Smajstrla laced a two-out double to left field and scored on a single by first baseman Brad Henderson.

McMurry (5-4) fought back with two runs in the third inning on a two-RBI double by Carrizalez to take a 2-1 lead.

The Rams came up big in the fifth inning with two runs, scoring on a double play and a RBI-single
Freshman Jason Vaughn came to pitch the sixth and seventh innings to pick up the save. The Richland, Texas native allowed only one hit in the final two innings.

Hopson (2-1) pitched five strong innings, allowing two unearned runs on four hits, while striking out three batters.

"Hopson did a great job today," head coach Mike Jeffcoat said. "He works quick and throws a lot of strikes. He battles every time he pitches and gives us a chance to win the game."

In the second game, the Rams could only manage four hits and the defense committed three errors.

"We didn't do a good job of getting the big hits when we need them", Jeffcoat said. "We made too mnay miscues to come away with a sweep today."

Shea Harrison (2-1) suffered the loss for the Rams, allowing three earned runs on four hits while striking out two batters in one inning of work.

Texas Wesleyan will be back in action Friday when it hosts Concordia-Lutheran. The doubleheader is set to begin at 1 p.m. A single game will also be played on Saturday at 12 p.m. All games will take place at LaGrave Field.
