FORT WORTH, Texas – The hot bat of Zach
Archer paced the Texas Wesleyan Rams (4-1) as they defeated the Concordia University
Tornados (1-4) in both games of a doubleheader Friday afternoon, 4-3, and 4-0.
Archer’s bomb was the third game ending hit for the Rams in their first
5 games. Archer’s
homerun in the eighth inning ended game one of the series. He continued his assault
with a double, two RBI, and a run scored in the second game. His sacrifice fly
ball in the first inning of the second game scored Mark Smajstrla which proved
to be the only run support the Rams pitching staff would need. Josh
Vander Hey continued his strong start to the season going one for two to keep
his team leading average at .500. Texas Wesleyan
took an early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning, but Concordia forced
extra innings, scoring in the fourth, sixth, and seventh innings. Jason
Hopson struck out six over five strong innings in the first game before being
relieved by Smajstrla. Opposing batters are hitting just .167 off Hopson on the
season. Jason Vaughn pitched the final two innings to earn the victory. Shea
Harrison and Jayson Rachuig combined for the shutout in the second game. The lefty
Harrison’s seven strikeouts over four innings were high for the team so
far this season. Drew French pitched two solid
innings of relief for the Tornados in the second game striking out two while giving
up no runs on one hit and a walk The teams
meet again Saturday February 12 at LaGrave Field. First pitch is at noon.
