SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Texas Wesleyan
golf team came from 18 shots back after the first round to finish
second at the Ratler Invitational Tuesday afternoon.
Texas Wesleyan (293-278-279-850) finished
the tournament at 14-under par and the Rams had all four counting
scores in rounds two and three below par for the first time in over
two years.
Cameron University (275-291-289-849) took
home first-place honors. They held an 18-shot advantage after
round one but the Rams came storming back with two brilliant rounds
to finish one stroke back.
"The first round is what kept us from
winning the tournament," head coach Kevin Millikan said. "We
didn't play bad, we just didn't make our putts. We had the opportunities
but didn't finish."
Sophomore Scott Sikes (71-68-68-207) finished
in second place finishing at nine-under par for the tournament.
This came after his victory at the Grand Canyon Invitational just
two weeks ago. In his last six rounds of golf, the Irving, Texas
native, is 18-under par, with every round under par.
"Scott put together another nice performance,"
Millikan said. "He is firing on all cylinders and the team
is following his lead.
Junior Reino Deetlefs (74-70-70-214) finished
in eighth place, while sophomore Dan Hahn (76-70-70-216) and senior
Justin Ward (74-70-72-216) finished in a tie for ninth place. Senior
Euan McIntosh (74-77-71-222) rounded out the scoring for the Rams
in a tie for 28th.
Texas Wesleyan will be back in action Monday
when they travel to Oklahoma City, Okla. to take part in the Oklahoma
Christian Eagle Invitational. The 36-hole tournament will end on
Tuesday.
