MARSHALL, Texas -
Junior Jose Melendez scored his sixth goal of the season to lead Texas Wesleyan
over conference-rival Wiley College, 2-0, Wednesday afternoon at Wildcat Field.
Texas
Wesleyan (4-6-1, 3-1 RRAC) opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Melendez
received a through ball from junior Chase Stephens and beat the Wiley goalkeeper
one-on-one. Junior Rene Mercado put the Rams ahead, 2-0, when he scored from 30
yards out off of a free-kick. That would be all of the scoring as the Rams were
unable to finish any of their scoring chances the rest of the way.
Texas
Wesleyan outshot the Wildcats, 15-9 and sophomore goalkeeper Thomas Hansen picked
up five saves on the day.
"We dominated
the play today with great ball movement," head coach Steve Jones said. "We
just couldn't finish today and their keeper did a good job against us."
Texas
Wesleyan returns to action Saturday when they travel to take on Sooner-Conference
member Oklahoma City. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. Oklahoma City defeated the Rams
last season in Fort Worth, 3-0.
